Towards the end of the first half stoppage time, Spurs' Dutch No. 7, Xavi Simons, stepped up for a free kick just outside the box in what was a dangerous opportunity for Thomas Frank's squad. Simons stepped up with confidence but ended up pelting the ball into the hands of Manchester City's Gianluigi Donnarumma to end what was an unremarkable first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which saw City breeze with a 2-0 lead.
Throughout the first 45 minutes, Spurs could not get a meaningful foot on the ball, while Pep Guardiola's side was breezing through the midfield, finding unmarked zones across the pitch, which resulted in over double the accurate passes and a 2-0 advantage.
To start, Tottenham's Yves Bissouma was caught on the ball by the fiesty Bernardo Silva, who then picked a pass to striker Erling Haaland, who then laid a pass off to the oncoming right winger Rayan Cherki. Cherki glided down the pitch and just inside the box in front of center back Radu Dragusin, using the Romanian as a screen to shuffle his right-footed effort past Guglielmo Vicario to give City a 1-0 lead with just 10 minutes on the clock.
From that point on, City continued their dominance both on and off the ball, continuously picking passes away from the flat Spurs side, all while slowly chipping away at a scattered defense that was looking for answers.
In the 44th minute, City grabbed what looked like the game-sealing goal after Dragusin was cornered by his own goal and ended up lofting a pass to the grateful feet of Rodri, who then slid a pass to Silva, who squared the ball to the newly acquired Antoine Semenyo, who doubled the lead, notching his fourth goal in five games with his new club.
After a chorus of boos echoed across the pitch at the halftime whistle, Frank knew things had to change.
"We had to be a little bit creative in the second half. We just changed it a bit, so we defended a little bit more on the 4-4-2, [rather] than the 3-4-3,” quoted the Dane to in-house media following the match.
A Tale Of Two Halves
While a 4-4-2 shape typically looks like a pragmatic formation, Frank instructed Spurs to clog up the midfield and to push the team's wingers and fullbacks up the pitch, which immediately resulted in an early chance for Spurs as left back Destiny Udogie lashed a 52nd-minute strike which Donnarumma parried away, foreshadowing a common occurrence in the second period.
Seconds later, Spurs found their breakthrough with a controversial Dominic Solanke goal, where the camera angles appear to show Solanke sweeping through City defender March Guehi to get the final touch on a wide pass that came from the feet of Simons.
“If a central defender does that to a striker, this is a penalty, right?" Quoted City manager Pep Guardiola post-match.
With a 2-1 lead, Guardiola's side then began to garner a bit more time on the ball, but could not create a meaningful chance, leaving Spurs enough hope to grab their equalizer.
Thanks to Tottenham's renewed emphasis on winning the second balls in the midfield, indutrious midfielder Conor Gallagher caught Nico Gonzalez and Nico O'Reilly sleeping with posession and then shoveled a pass into the box which Solanke expertly flicked above into the outstretched hands of Donnarumma, however, the Italian could not get a clean enough swipe on the shot leading to a 2-2 scoreline with 20 minutes to play.
A Back-And-Forth Final Few Minutes
Through the remainder of the second half, both teams had their chances to find the capping goal, with Donnarumma having to make a combo of last-ditch saves, combined with fraught set-piece chances and a Tijjani Reijnders header which left Vicario scrambling but ultimately landed just wide.
"I think the fans should be so proud of the players. What a shift they showed today, and now we've got something out of it, something to build on. And we need to carry on," quoted Frank.
As it stands, City now sits six points behind league leaders Arsenal with 14 matches to play. Arsenal collected a much-needed three points Saturday after their dominant 4-0 win against Leeds United, which props the Gunners to 53 points.
